THE ARTS SOCIETY WEST MERCIA AREA
TWO SPECIAL INTEREST DAYS ON POWER, PROPAGANDA AND
PATRONAGE IN THE ART OF THE RENAISSANCE:
REFORMATION AND COUNTER REFORMATION
Thursday 26 October 2017

To be held in the Big Classical Cheltenham College Bath Road Cheltenham GL53 7LD
500 years ago Martin Luther pinned his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany which lead
to religious upheaval in Europe. The power of the Renaissance families, together with the actions of
avaricious, ambitious Popes lead Luther to make his statements. The warring factions of Protestant
Germany, Charles V - Holy Roman Emperor, the Italian Principalities and Francois, King of France were
creating tumult in Europe – a momentous period in Europe’s history. The two days will look at many of
the works of the period including Titian, Cranach, Raphael, Holbein, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Hals and
Vermeer. A feast indeed.
